House – medieval, Ballitore, Co. Kildare

It was a road scheme that brought these buildings back into view, briefly and partially, before the tarmac covered them again. During preliminary testing along the route of the N9 Moone-Timolin-Ballitore Hill Realignment Scheme in County Kildare, archaeologists recovered significant quantities of medieval pottery and traces of structural remains. That was enough to trigger a full excavation of two adjacent fields, designated Site 45, where what emerged was the outline of two medieval houses sitting side by side within a large enclosure.

The two structures, recorded as Structure A and Structure B, lay parallel to one another, less than two metres apart. Each measured roughly twelve metres in length and four and a half metres wide, oriented roughly northeast to southwest. What survived of them took the form of H-shaped foundation trenches, a construction method in which parallel slot trenches are cut to receive the sill beams or footings of a timber or earth-walled building, with large packing stones set into the cuts to stabilise the frame. Later ploughing had disturbed and obscured much of this, making the outlines difficult to read. The pottery recovered alongside the structures told a clearer story. Most of it was Leinster cooking ware and local green-glazed ware, the everyday ceramic repertoire of a medieval rural settlement in this part of Ireland. Among the sherds, however, were pieces identified as English and French in origin, a reminder that even an ordinary rural site in medieval Kildare was not entirely cut off from wider trade networks reaching across the Irish Sea and beyond.
