House – medieval, Coolmore, Co. Tipperary

In the rough pasture at Coolmore in County Tipperary, a set of low wall-footings sits inside a moated enclosure, quietly outlining what was probably once a medieval house.

Moated sites, common across Ireland from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, were enclosed by a water-filled or wet ditch and typically served as the defended farmsteads of Anglo-Norman settlers or prosperous Gaelic landowners. The enclosure here occupies a low natural rise in wet, rushy ground, the kind of waterlogged landscape that made a surrounding ditch both easy to maintain and genuinely useful as a deterrent.

Within the enclosure there are three sets of building footings in total. The one in the southern sector is the most legible, measuring roughly 7.3 metres by 12.8 metres and oriented east to west. What makes it especially interesting is a possible T-plan projection extending from the north wall, a small additional room or wing measuring around 3.1 metres by 4.2 metres, which hints at a degree of internal organisation beyond a simple rectangular hall. An entrance, about 1.9 metres wide, sits roughly in the middle of the south wall. If these structures are contemporary with the moated enclosure itself, they are medieval in date, though the question of precise chronology remains open. The survival of such wall-footings in agricultural land is often a matter of chance, the ground being too wet or uneven to have made deep ploughing worthwhile over the centuries.
