Hut site, An Choill Mhór, Co. Kerry

At An Choill Mhór in County Kerry, two ancient hut foundations sit joined together in the landscape, the kind of paired arrangement that raises more questions than it answers.

One of them, designated the west hut, is the subject of this record, though it only makes full sense understood alongside its eastern neighbour, the two structures sharing a wall or boundary in a conjoined plan that hints at domestic life organised around proximity and shared space.

The site was documented by Judith Cuppage in her 1986 survey of the Dingle Peninsula, a meticulous catalogue of the archaeological landscape of that part of Kerry. Cuppage recorded this as one of a pair of hut foundations, the west hut distinguished from its companion and illustrated in the survey's figure 14. Hut foundations of this kind are the stone outlines, sometimes barely raised above ground level, that represent the footprint of early structures, the walls themselves long since robbed for field boundaries or simply collapsed into the earth. On the Dingle Peninsula, such remains are relatively common across the upland and coastal zones, remnants of settlement patterns that stretch back through the early medieval period and possibly earlier. The conjoined arrangement here is the detail worth pausing on; two units sharing form and likely function, which may indicate a household, a small farmstead, or some form of enclosure system whose precise purpose has not survived into the record.
