What makes it quietly odd is the label it once carried in the Ordnance Survey Name Books, the nineteenth-century field records compiled by the surveyors who mapped Ireland in detail for the first time: they recorded it as a "large fort and burial place for children." That pairing of a defended enclosure with a children's burial ground suggests the site may have functioned at some point as a cillín, an unconsecrated burial place for unbaptised infants, though the enclosure itself is considerably older in character.

The structure measures roughly 24 metres north to south and 23 metres east to west internally, which is a substantial footprint for this kind of monument. At the north-north-west, the foundations of a circular hut actually interrupt the enclosing wall rather than sitting neatly inside it, a detail that hints at a long and layered history of use and alteration. The hut's drystone walls, built without mortar, are 1.5 metres wide and enclose a modest interior of around 5 by 4.7 metres, with a narrow entrance of 0.7 metres facing south-south-east. A second hut, subcircular in plan, occupies the north-east of the enclosure and has an internal diameter of 4.3 metres; its wall survives to a height of half a metre and is revetted on the outside by upright stone slabs, a technique that stabilises the base of a rubble wall by lining it with flat stones set on their edges. The site was documented by archaeologists Aidan O'Sullivan and John Sheehan as part of their survey of the Iveragh Peninsula, published by Cork University Press in 1996.
