Hut site, Annagh More, Co. Kerry

On a south-facing slope in the rough heather and bog of Annagh More, a small oval outline barely rises above the ground.

It measures just 2.2 metres north to south and 1.7 metres east to west, its collapsed drystone wall, the kind of mortarless stone construction used across Ireland for millennia, protruding only around thirty centimetres above the bog surface and half-hidden under heather. The rubble that has tumbled downslope to the south and the shallow cut into the hillside at the northern end, where the builders levelled the interior against the gradient, are almost the only clues that someone once shaped this ground deliberately.

The hut sits to the west of The Paps of Dana, the two rounded twin summits in the Derrynasaggart Mountains whose name links them to the goddess Danu of Irish mythology, their profile long associated with the landscape of early sacred and rural life in Kerry. That association matters as context, because this small structure belongs to a wider pattern of upland activity rather than standing in isolation. Around 35 metres to the south-east lies a second hut site, and roughly 90 metres to the north-east a relict field wall survives, a remnant of an organised agricultural boundary that suggests this hillside was once worked and inhabited in some sustained way. Together these features point towards a community of use, however modest, in a landscape that now feels entirely given over to wind and bog.
