Hut site, Ardacluckeen, Co. Kerry

On the Iveragh Peninsula in south Kerry, a pair of ancient hut sites sits at Ardacluckeen, the kind of place that registers as little more than a scatter of stones until you begin to read the ground more carefully.

One of the two structures, roughly rectangular in plan, measures just 3.4 metres north to south and 2.9 metres east to west internally, which gives a sense of how compact early habitation could be. A gap in the eastern wall may mark where an entrance once stood, though whether this was an original feature or a later break is difficult to say with certainty.
