Hut site, Baile An Chnocáin, Co. Kerry

On the lower western slopes of Brandon Mountain in County Kerry, a small circular stone hut has been absorbed so thoroughly into a modern field wall that the two are now structurally inseparable.

That quiet merging of the ancient and the everyday is part of what makes this site on the Dingle Peninsula so quietly arresting. The hut was built using corbelling, a technique in which courses of drystone are laid so that each one projects slightly inward over the one below, gradually closing the space until a roof is formed without the use of mortar or timber. The result, here, is a structure just 3.5 metres in diameter but rising to a height of 2.45 metres, with walls nearly 1.4 metres thick.

Inside, three niches were cut or built into the walls, likely used for storage or to hold small objects, lamps, or votive items. There is also a blocked wall-chamber that may be a souterrain, an underground or semi-underground passage built into or beside early medieval structures, typically used for cool storage or as a refuge. A rectangular enclosure abutting the western side of the hut was probably added later as a sheep-fold, suggesting the site continued to serve practical purposes long after its original use was forgotten or abandoned. The hut was recorded by J. Cuppage as part of the Corca Dhuibhne archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, published in 1986, which documented the dense concentration of early structures across this part of Kerry.
