The structure is known by the Irish name Clochán Liath, and what makes it quietly arresting is its simplicity. This is not a ruin in the conventional sense, with tumbled walls and collapsed mortar, but a deliberate arrangement of raw slabs, set end-to-end and in places overlapping, forming a roughly circular enclosure. A clochán is a type of early stone dwelling or cell, typically associated with early Christian monastic traditions in Ireland, often built without mortar using a corbelling technique. This example, however, takes a more elemental form.

The internal space measures approximately 3.75 metres by 3.25 metres, and the slabs themselves vary considerably in scale, ranging from 35 centimetres to 1.2 metres in height, and from 45 centimetres to just over a metre in width. The two tallest slabs, positioned to the north-east, are thought to mark the original entrance, a detail that gives the structure a faint sense of orientation and intention. Additional upright slabs appear outside the main ring, to the north-east and south-west, suggesting the site may have had associated features or a more complex original layout than the surviving remains immediately convey. Both the scholar Lynch, writing in 1902, and the art historian Françoise Henry, writing in 1957, recorded the site under the name Clochán Liath, placing it within a longer tradition of scholarly notice on a peninsula already dense with early medieval remains.
