Hut site, Baile Mór Thiar, Co. Kerry

On a south-west facing slope above Ventry Harbour, on rough mountain terrain in west Kerry, a small cluster of ancient structures sits divided by a modern field wall, the newer stonework cutting straight through what was once a coherent settlement.

It is the kind of accidental severance that quietly dramatises how the present keeps interrupting the past.

The site, documented by Judith Cuppage in 1986, consists of two hut sites enclosed within the very fragmentary remains of what may have been a cashel wall. A cashel is a dry-stone enclosure, typically circular, built to surround a dwelling or group of dwellings, and here its outline has been reduced to little more than a suggestion. The modern field wall now bisects the whole complex on a north-south line, with a souterrain sitting immediately to its west. A souterrain is an underground stone-lined passage, common in early medieval Irish settlements, thought to have served as a place of refuge or cold storage. The two huts proper lie to the east of the wall. A third hut, located approximately 55 metres to the south-south-east of the main group, is considerably more ruinous. It appears to have been circular in plan, with an internal diameter of around four metres. What remains of it is a low stony bank, standing roughly 0.8 metres on the interior face and just 0.3 metres on the exterior, with a width of about 0.75 metres. Short stretches of the inner wall face are still visible, and a gap on the southern side marks where an entrance once was, though nothing of any structural detail survives there. The whole assemblage speaks to a pattern of early settlement found across the Dingle Peninsula, where small enclosed farmsteads occupied elevated ground with clear sightlines toward the coast.
