Hut site, Baile Ristín, Co. Kerry

Beneath the dense overgrowth at Baile Ristín, on the Dingle Peninsula, a stony mound carries a name that already sets it apart: Lios Clochán na Lobhar, which translates roughly as the fort of the lepers' stone huts.

What survives is a roughly oval mass of earth and stone, measuring about 20 metres from northwest to southeast and 11 metres across, rising no more than a metre and a half at its highest point. Within it, if you know where to look, the outlines of one or possibly two ancient hut-sites can still be traced.

Earlier observers recorded the site as a circular fort, about one chain, or 20 metres, in diameter and five feet high, a description that suggests it once had a more legible profile than it does today. The two structures inside it may have been clocháns, a clochán being a dry-stone corbelled hut of a type found across early Christian Ireland, often associated with monastic or hermitic settlement. At the northwest end of the mound, a roughly circular area is enclosed by walling that has been badly damaged and partially collapsed, with an entrance gap to the southeast leading toward a second possible hut. That second structure presents as a mound of stone and earth with a central depression measuring four metres by three, the kind of hollow left when a corbelled roof collapses inward over centuries. The two may originally have been conjoined, sharing a wall between them. Complicating matters, some of the accumulated material may not be collapsed building fabric at all, but rather the debris of a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead common in early medieval Ireland, that was demolished or simply fell apart over time. The site is, in other words, genuinely ambiguous: a layered place where different phases of use or destruction are difficult to unpick. J. Cuppage documented these remains in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula Archaeological Survey, which remains the foundation for understanding the archaeology of this part of Kerry.
