Hut site, Ballard Commons, Co. Cork

On the south-east-facing slopes of Maulin in County Cork, three small circular structures sit within a few metres of one another on open bogland, their stone walls slowly being reclaimed by rush and peat.

The one at the centre of this cluster measures just 3.4 metres in diameter, its wall still protruding above the bog surface to a height of around 0.4 metres and a thickness of 0.6 metres, most legible along the arc from south-east to north. Rubble lies scattered inside. What makes the grouping quietly arresting is the proximity of the other two: one sits 8 metres to the south, another 6 metres to the north-east. Three structures, each modest on its own, close enough together to suggest some kind of coordinated use of this hillside.

Hut sites of this kind, simple stone-walled enclosures used as temporary shelters, appear across upland Ireland in considerable numbers, though their dates and purposes can be difficult to pin down without excavation. Some are associated with seasonal grazing, when people and livestock moved to higher ground during summer months in a practice known as booleying. Others may relate to turf-cutting, small-scale agriculture, or other activities that drew people periodically into marginal terrain. The site overlooks the valley of the Owgarriff River, which would have provided a clear orientation for anyone working these slopes. The bog that now partially buries the walls has both preserved and obscured the structures, leaving enough visible to read their outline but little else.
