Settlement Sites
Tucked into the southern side of a larger enclosure in Ballynamought, County Cork, a small circular hut site survives in a state that rewards patient observation.
What makes it quietly unusual is the way it was built: rather than sitting on flat ground, its western side was deliberately cut back into the slope, using the hillside itself as part of the structure. This technique, sometimes called souterrain-adjacent earthworking in a loose sense, speaks to a practical intelligence about landscape, insulating a dwelling against wind and cold by letting the earth do part of the work.
