Hut site, Ballyprior, Co. Laois

Within the walls of a stone cashel in Ballyprior, County Laois, the faint outlines of a circular hut survive in the north-eastern corner of the enclosure.

A cashel is a type of early medieval stone-walled ringfort, typically associated with farming settlements of the first millennium AD, and what remains here is modest by any measure: a roughly eleven-metre circle of trace evidence, pressed into the ground long enough ago that the structure itself has long since disappeared, leaving only its footprint behind.

The hut sits within the north-eastern quadrant of the cashel, a positioning that is fairly typical of how domestic structures were arranged inside such enclosures, often leaving the central area clear. At eleven metres in diameter the hut would have been a reasonably substantial dwelling, large enough to accommodate a family and perhaps their animals during winter months. Sites like this were the ordinary fabric of early Irish rural life, farmsteads rather than fortresses, though the stone walls of the cashel would have offered some protection for livestock as much as for people.
