Hut site, Beheenagh, Co. Kerry

Inside a low earthen enclosure on the Dingle Peninsula, three shallow depressions pressed into the ground are all that remain of what were once people's homes.

They are easy to overlook, even underfoot, yet they preserve the rough footprint of domestic life from early medieval Ireland, tucked within the banks of a rath, the circular earthwork enclosures that once dotted the Irish countryside in their thousands and served as farmsteads for individual family groups.

This particular rath at Beheenagh is univallate, meaning it has a single enclosing bank and ditch rather than the multiple rings sometimes thrown up around higher-status sites. Within it, three probable hut-sites survive as depressions in the earth. One lies against the north-western bank, an irregular hollow roughly three metres across and no more than a quarter of a metre deep. The other two sit in the western part of the interior, side by side, connected by what appears to be a short passage between them. These are somewhat more pronounced, reaching depths of up to one metre, and measure roughly three to three and a half metres at their widest. The pairing of two adjacent structures with a connecting passage is a quietly unusual detail, suggesting not just habitation but a considered arrangement of space within the enclosure. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey, a thorough regional study published under the title Corca Dhuibhne, which catalogued the extraordinary density of ancient monuments across this westerly stretch of Kerry.
