Hut site, Bunnamohaun, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Bunnamohaun in County Mayo, a hut site sits in the landscape, formally recorded as an archaeological monument but largely unknown beyond that designation.

Hut sites of this kind are among the most common yet least celebrated survivals in the Irish countryside, ranging from the remains of simple circular or oval stone structures used by farming communities in the prehistoric and early medieval periods, to more recent shelters associated with seasonal grazing practices known as booleying. Their very ordinariness is part of what makes them easy to overlook.
