Hut site, Cahircalla More, Co. Clare

In the townland of Cahircalla More, in County Clare, the ground holds the traces of a hut site, one of thousands of such features scattered across the Irish landscape that speak to centuries of rural settlement without announcing themselves loudly.

Hut sites are exactly what the name suggests: the remains, often no more than a slight depression, a scatter of stone, or a low circular bank, of a structure in which people once lived or sheltered. They range in date from the prehistoric to the early medieval period, and their very ordinariness is part of what makes them easy to overlook.
