Settlement Sites
In the townland of Callanafersy, on the southern shore of the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, the ground holds the remains of an ancient hut site.
These structures, modest and easily overlooked in a landscape crowded with more dramatic monuments, were the ordinary shelters of early inhabitants, built from stone, timber, or sod and used for everything from seasonal grazing to permanent settlement. The fact that one survives here, even as a low earthwork or scatter of stone, is a quiet reminder that the land was lived in long before anyone thought to record it.
