Hut site, Cill Chúile, Co. Kerry

On the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, a scattering of early settlement remains survives in the townland of Cill Chúile, and among them is something easy to overlook: a partial circular foundation that may represent the remains of a second hut site, sitting roughly 31 metres to the east of a more complete example nearby.

The two features together hint at a small cluster of habitation rather than a lone dwelling, though the fragmentary nature of this second structure means its precise character remains uncertain.

The site was noted by Judith Cuppage in her 1986 archaeological survey of the Dingle Peninsula, a landmark piece of fieldwork that systematically documented the remarkable density of prehistoric and early medieval remains across the area. Cuppage recorded only a portion of the circular foundation, which is the kind of detail that tends to indicate either significant deterioration over time or a structure that was never fully completed. Circular foundations of this type are generally associated with the early medieval period in Ireland, when small stone-walled huts, sometimes called clochán or simply round huts, were built by farming communities and occasionally by religious hermits who favoured the remote Atlantic headlands of Kerry for precisely the isolation they offered. Whether this particular example belongs to a domestic or ecclesiastical context, the notes do not say.

The proximity of two possible hut sites in the same area is the more interesting detail here. It raises the possibility of a small settlement grouping rather than an isolated structure, though the evidence is slender and the second foundation is only partially preserved. The Dingle Peninsula holds one of the highest concentrations of early medieval field monuments in Ireland, and sites like this one, quiet and incompletely understood, form part of that broader landscape even when they resist easy interpretation.
