Circular foundations of this type are generally associated with the early medieval period in Ireland, when small stone-walled huts, sometimes called clochán or simply round huts, were built by farming communities and occasionally by religious hermits who favoured the remote Atlantic headlands of Kerry for precisely the isolation they offered.
