Hut site, Cloontreem, Co. Cork

On a west-facing slope in the hill pastures of Cloontreem, County Cork, there is a circular structure so small and so low that a casual walker might step over it without pausing.

The remains measure just two metres across, the collapsed stone wall folding inward on itself, and the whole thing sits half-swallowed by shallow bog. What makes it quietly arresting is less its scale than its context: it is embedded within an entire network of relict field boundaries, the ghostly outlines of an agricultural landscape that has long since gone out of use, the fields and the dwelling fading together at roughly the same rate.

The structure is a hut site, a category of small, usually drystone-built enclosure associated with seasonal or temporary occupation, often linked to transhumance, the practice of moving livestock to upland pastures for summer grazing. The wall that once defined it, roughly 0.6 metres thick and now standing only about 0.3 metres high, has collapsed into the interior rather than outward, which suggests gradual deterioration rather than deliberate demolition. The original base stones still protrude above the bog surface, giving a reliable outline of the floor plan. A section of the surrounding field boundary system curves along the northern arc of the hut, indicating that whoever built the enclosure was working within, or contributing to, an already organised parcelling of the hillside. The undulating pasture around it preserves further traces of that same system, low earthen and stone walls threading across the slope in patterns that suggest prolonged, careful use of the land before it was eventually abandoned to rough grazing and bog.
