Hut site, Com Úra, Co. Kerry

On the floor of a glacially carved hollow at the north-eastern side of Knockmoyle Mountain in County Kerry, a small rectangular structure sits quietly in rough stony pasture.

A corrie, the bowl-shaped depression formed when a glacier scours back into a hillside, provides a natural shelter here, and it is in precisely this kind of marginal, tucked-away ground that traces of older occupation tend to survive. The hut itself is modest in scale, measuring just 3.7 metres east to west and 1.8 metres north to south, its drystone walls partially collapsed but still standing to around 1.2 metres in places. Drystone construction, which uses no mortar and relies entirely on the careful fitting of stones against one another, can be deceptively durable, and the lower courses here are described as well constructed. A narrow entrance, less than 0.6 metres wide, sits at the north-west corner.

Extending westward from that same north-west corner is a second, more roughly built wall, running out for about six metres. This kind of short outwork, projecting from a domestic structure, often served a practical purpose, perhaps to pen animals or to create a sheltered work area immediately outside the entrance. Around 50 metres to the south lies a separate enclosure, suggesting that whatever activity took place here, it was not entirely isolated. The site sits within a broader landscape of marginal upland use that characterised much of south-west Kerry across various periods, though without closer dating evidence it is difficult to say when this particular structure was occupied or for how long. The combination of the hut, the projecting wall, and the nearby enclosure points to a small but purposeful arrangement of space rather than a single casual shelter.
