Hut site, Coolnaha, Co. Mayo

In a pasture field at Coolnaha in County Mayo, a low circular mound sits just to the south-east of an early medieval cashel, the kind of stone-walled enclosure that once served as a farmstead or fortified homestead.

On its own, the mound would be easy to dismiss as a field boundary or a random accumulation of cleared stone. Look more carefully, though, and a different possibility emerges: a hut site, the faint remains of a small circular structure that may once have sheltered a person or a family connected to that same cashel.

The structure measures roughly seven metres in diameter, its outline traced by a sod-covered stone bank or wall about two and a half metres wide. The wall survives to only about half a metre in interior height, and a little less on the exterior, though where the ground naturally falls away to the east and south-east, the outer face rises to around a metre. That variation is not the result of construction but of topography, the land simply dropping away and allowing more of the wall to stand clear. The interior sits slightly lower than the surrounding ground, a feature sometimes seen in early hut sites where occupation material and collapsed walling have gradually built up the ground outside. For now, that interior is partly obscured by loose stone, likely dumped there during agricultural clearance over the centuries, and by a tangle of hazel and blackthorn scrub that makes close examination difficult. The qualification "may be" applied to this site is honest: without excavation, certainty is impossible, and what survives above ground is suggestive rather than conclusive.
