On the northern bank of the Cummeenduff river, close to the southern shore of Curraghmore lake in County Kerry, a small circular structure barely rises above the ground.
What remains of this drystone hut, built without mortar by laying stones carefully upon one another, measures roughly 4.2 metres in diameter, stands only about ten centimetres above the surrounding land, and retains walls some half a metre thick. It is not much to look at now, but the footprint is legible enough to suggest a modest, purposeful shelter, the kind of seasonal or temporary dwelling that once appeared across upland and coastal Kerry in considerable numbers.
