Hut site, Doolin, Co. Clare

On a north-west-facing slope above Poll Cnaimhín, a rocky beach on the Clare coast near Doolin, a rough circle of stones sits quietly at the edge of an escarpment.

It is easy to miss. The wall that defines it rises to no more than twenty centimetres at its highest point, and the whole structure measures less than five metres across. Yet the geometry is deliberate: a circular hut site, its perimeter wall still a metre wide in places, with several large stones remaining in the centre where a floor or hearth once would have been.

Circular stone hut sites of this kind appear across the Irish landscape in considerable numbers, ranging in date from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period. They are the ground-level traces of simple single-roomed dwellings, the wall serving as a base onto which a timber or turf superstructure would have been raised. What makes this particular example worth pausing over is its position: set at the escarpment edge, oriented towards the north-west, looking out over a shoreline identified in Tim Robinson's 1977 mapping as Poll Cnaimhín. Whether the location reflects a practical relationship with the sea, a boundary marker, or simply the pragmatics of available ground, the notes do not say, and the stones themselves offer no easy answer.

The site sits in rough pasture, which means the surrounding ground is uneven and the remains low-lying. The wall circuit is clearest when viewed from the south, and the central stones are the most immediately legible feature on approach. The escarpment edge and the beach below give the place a particular quality of exposure, especially in westerly weather.
