Hut site, Faha, Co. Kerry

At Faha in County Kerry, three possible ancient hut sites exist in the archaeological record not as stones, earthworks, or any visible trace on the ground, but as faint cropmarks caught in a single satellite image.

Cropmarks appear when buried features affect the growth of vegetation above them, causing subtle differences in colour or density that become legible from the air, or in this case, from orbit. That fleeting visibility, fixed in a Google Earth orthoimage taken on 23 March 2003, is the only direct evidence we have for what may once have stood here.

The three possible hut sites sit between two enclosures, the kind of roughly circular or oval boundaries that, across Ireland, typically date to the early medieval period and once defined farmsteads, their associated outbuildings, and the lives of the families who worked the surrounding land. The grouping, hut sites tucked between enclosures, suggests a domestic landscape of some complexity, with people and structures organised across a shared space. Yet by the time aerial surveys were repeated, something had changed. Orthoimages taken between 2011 and 2013, and again in April 2021, show no surface remains and no cropmarks. Whatever soil conditions or seasonal moisture made the buried features legible in 2003 were not repeated, and the site has effectively disappeared back into the field.
