On the lower slopes of Red Hill in County Sligo, a slight depression in a pasture field marks the outline of a dwelling that has been slowly returning to the earth for centuries.

The circular form is still legible, a sunken floor roughly six metres across, ringed by a low bank of stone now blanketed in sod. It is the kind of feature that a casual walker might cross without registering, noticing only that the ground felt oddly hollow underfoot.

Hut sites of this type, sometimes called platform or ring-hut sites, are the remains of simple circular structures once common across Ireland, their walls built from stone or timber, their roofs of thatch or turf. This particular example sits on a broad, level terrace cut into the sharply undulating limestone landscape around Red Hill, a name recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1913. The site was chosen with some care: the terrace provides a relatively flat footing on an otherwise broken hillside, with the ground dropping away steeply some twenty metres to the north. The enclosing bank is noticeably thicker on the southern side, reaching nearly two and a half metres in width compared to half that on the north, which may reflect how the structure was built up against the natural slope. A gap of about one and a half metres on the eastern side marks what was almost certainly the entrance. What makes the site a little more legible than many of its kind is the way the western portion of the bank has been absorbed into a later field boundary, a low stone wall extending away to the south-west and north-north-west. Whoever laid out those field divisions clearly found it easier to incorporate the old structure than to clear it, leaving the ancient and the agricultural folded together in the same line of stones.
