Hut site, Finnor More, Co. Clare

On a ridge running east to west through Finnor More in County Clare, a low circular mound sits in the landscape, overgrown and easy to overlook.

It measures just four metres across internally, defined by an earthen bank two to three metres wide, and the whole thing rises only half a metre or so above the surrounding ground on its outer face. No entrance gap interrupts the bank, and there is no fosse, the shallow ditch that typically accompanies earthworks of this kind. That absence of both features is precisely what makes the site quietly puzzling.

Officially, it has spent decades being catalogued under different headings without settling into a firm identity. It appeared as an enclosure in the Sites and Monuments Record in 1992, and again under the same classification in the Record of Monuments and Places in 1996, with the designation of hut site attached somewhere along the way. The uncertainty is not merely administrative. The structure's proportions and the absence of an obvious entrance have led to the suggestion that it may in fact be a ring-barrow, a type of low circular funerary monument common in Ireland from the Bronze Age onward, typically consisting of a central area enclosed by a bank with or without an outer ditch. If that interpretation is correct, what looks like the remains of a small dwelling could instead be a burial monument of considerable age. The two possibilities are not easy to separate without excavation, and none appears to have taken place.
