Hut site, Flemingstown, Co. Kerry

On a gentle north-north-westerly slope of Flemingstown mountain in County Kerry, a small enclosure sits quietly within a much larger one, its low bank of earth and stones barely reaching half a metre in height.

The hut itself measures only 2.5 by 3.2 metres, a space barely large enough to stand up and turn around in, yet the care taken in its construction is still legible in the ground. Two possible entrances survive, one in the east wall and one in the south, and it is not yet clear which was original.

The hut forms part of a wider complex known locally as Lismore, or An Lios Mór, a large roughly oval enclosure, the kind of earthwork known as a rath, a ring-fort typically used as a farmstead enclosure during the early medieval period in Ireland. The hut sits directly west of the main northern gap in that outer enclosure. What makes the interior of the rath particularly legible is the survival of a series of cultivation ridges running north-west to south-east, the faint corrugations of former tillage that fill most of the enclosed space. These ridge-and-furrow patterns are common on sites where the land was worked intensively over long periods, and their orientation here suggests a deliberate, organised approach to what would have been a modest but functional agricultural plot. The site was documented by J. Cuppage in the 1986 Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey, a thorough inventory of the Corca Dhuibhne region that remains a key reference for the area's field monuments.
