Hut site, Gearhanagoul, Co. Kerry

On a south-facing hillside in south-west Kerry, in the valley of the Coomeelan stream, something small and circular sits half-swallowed by bog.

It is only two metres across, barely large enough to shelter a single person, and its drystone walls, built without mortar by stacking and fitting stone against stone, have long since collapsed inward and greened over with grass. Yet the lower courses still protrude above the bog surface, and large boulders incorporated into the north-east and west sections of the wall remain stubbornly visible, suggesting that whoever built it chose or placed those stones with some deliberateness. The structure is what archaeologists classify as a hut site, a term that covers a broad range of small circular shelters used across many centuries in Ireland, associated variously with seasonal farming, herding, or temporary occupation of upland ground.

What gives this particular site its quiet interest is the company it keeps. It sits within a network of relict field boundaries, the ghost-lines of an agricultural landscape that was once actively managed and is now rough hill pasture. These boundaries, read alongside the hut itself, suggest a place where people not only sheltered but worked the surrounding land, marking out plots and grazing runs in a valley that has since largely been reclaimed by bog. The Coomeelan stream still runs through the valley below, and the south-facing slope would have offered whatever warmth and shelter the Kerry uplands could provide. The walls of the hut, recorded as standing to roughly 0.7 metres in height with a thickness of around 0.6 metres, are modest but not negligible; enough to have supported a low roof of some kind, whether turf, timber, or hide.
