Hut site, Keeloges, Co. Mayo

In the townland of Keeloges in County Mayo, a hut site sits on the landscape, quietly classified and catalogued but not yet fully described.

That gap between recognition and documentation is itself a small curiosity. The site has been identified as an archaeological monument, which means it was observed, mapped, and assigned a place in the national record, yet the details that would tell us who built it, when it was used, and what kind of structure it once was remain, for now, out of easy reach.

Hut sites in Ireland range enormously in age and character, from Bronze Age circular dwellings to the booley huts used by transhumance communities in early modern times, when cattle were driven to upland summer pastures and temporary shelters were thrown up to house those who followed. Mayo, with its stretches of bog and mountain, has no shortage of either type. Without more specific information attached to the Keeloges site, it is not possible to say which tradition this particular example belongs to, or whether any structural remains are still visible above ground. What can be said is that the townland name itself, derived from the Irish "Na Caológa", relates to narrow strips of land, suggesting a landscape that was once carefully divided and worked by people whose traces are still being pieced together.
