Hut site, Killelan, Co. Kerry

On the lower eastern slopes of Killelan in County Kerry, a small stone structure survives in a rocky field that most walkers would pass without a second glance.

It is a corbelled hut, built from dry stone without mortar, its walls angled inward course by course until they meet at the top, a technique that has kept simple shelters standing in the Irish landscape for well over a thousand years. This one is subrectangular in plan, roughly 2.6 metres by 1.4 metres, and stands about 1.5 metres high, with walls around 1.3 metres thick. The entrance faces east.

What makes the site more than a single curiosity is the presence of a second structure a short distance to the southwest. The outline of a circular hut, about 3.8 metres across, survives beneath a covering of sod, its form still legible in the ground with a possible entrance at the northwest. The juxtaposition of the two, one corbelled and relatively intact, the other reduced to a buried trace, suggests a small cluster of occupation rather than an isolated building. Structures of this kind on the Iveragh Peninsula are often associated with the early medieval period, when seasonal grazing in upland areas, a practice known as booleying, left scattered traces of temporary or semi-permanent habitation across the Kerry hills. Whether these huts served herders, penitents, or some combination of the two is the kind of question the stones themselves do not answer. The archaeological survey of the Iveragh Peninsula, compiled by A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan and published by Cork University Press in 1996, records both structures and remains the primary source for what is known about them.
