Hut site, Littlewood, Co. Westmeath

On a hilltop in Littlewood, County Westmeath, a ringfort quietly holds a secret within its own boundaries.

Ringforts, which are circular or oval enclosures typically dating from the early medieval period and built as farmsteads or defended homesteads, are common enough across Ireland, but this one carries something extra: inside its large oval perimeter, the grass-covered outline of a house site is still visible at the centre of the interior. A settlement within a settlement, a domestic footprint preserved inside an enclosure that was already itself a kind of shelter.

The site occupies the summit of a prominent hill, positioned to command good views in all directions, which would have made it a practical choice for whoever chose to build and live here. That elevated position, useful for watching the surrounding landscape, is itself something of a clue to the thinking of early medieval communities, for whom visibility and defensibility were closely linked. By November 2011, when aerial photographs recorded the area, the hill had been substantially overtaken by trees and other vegetation, meaning the physical fabric of the ringfort and its interior house site now lie beneath a canopy that obscures what was once an open and commanding position. The earthworks remain, but the relationship between the site and its landscape, the panoramic quality that presumably shaped its original choice, has been quietly swallowed by decades of growth.
