Hut site, Murorgán, Co. Kerry

At Murorgán on the Dingle Peninsula, a short arc of drystone walling, just 1.45 metres long, is almost all that remains of what was once a corbelled hut.

Corbelled construction is an ancient technique in which courses of stone are laid so that each projects slightly inward over the one below, gradually closing to form a roof without mortar. That surviving arc, its upper course now level with the surrounding ground to the north, sits roughly 7.5 metres from a cluster of related features known as a clochan group, and the whole site is so ruined and disturbed that classifying it with any certainty has proven difficult for archaeologists.

What gives the site its particular character is not the stonework itself but the religious practice associated with it. The place is known locally as Turrasyline or Turas Fhlainn, a name that records a turas, a prescribed circuit of prayer and penitence performed at a series of sacred stations, a form of devotion deeply rooted in early Irish Christianity. Crucially, this turas was still being performed within living memory, and it included a visit to Tobar Fhlainn, a holy well located at the base of the sea-cliffs approximately 500 metres to the north. The combination of a named turas, a holy well, and a local tradition holding that a church once stood here all point towards an ecclesiastical origin for the site, even if the physical remains are now too fragmentary to confirm it outright. The survey of the Corca Dhuibhne region compiled by J. Cuppage in 1986 brought the site's details together, drawing on fieldwork across the broader Dingle Peninsula, one of the most archaeologically dense landscapes in Ireland.
