On the eastern summit of Turlough Hill in County Clare, a large enclosure takes a shape that is relatively rare in Irish archaeology: hexagonal rather than the more familiar circular or oval form.
Tucked against its inner north-western face, where the perimeter wall bends inward in a slight indentation, sits a small hut site, one of several that were built snug against the interior of the enclosure wall at various points around its edge. The arrangement suggests a deliberate pattern of inhabitation, with the enclosure wall serving as a shared boundary and perhaps a windbreak for the structures pressing up against it from within.
