Hut site, Radrinagh, Co. Kerry

In the townland of Radrinagh in County Kerry, a low mound sits at the centre of an earthen ringfort, half-swallowed by vegetation.

The arrangement itself is what makes it quietly unusual: a possible hut site positioned at the very heart of a rath, the circular enclosure that was the basic unit of early medieval rural settlement across Ireland. Raths were typically used as farmsteads, their earthen banks defining a protected space for a family and their animals, but the presence of a distinct raised structure at the centre adds a layer of complexity that is harder to read at a glance.
