Settlement Sites
In the townland of Scardaun in County Mayo, a hut site sits on the landscape, recorded and mapped but not yet widely described.
These sites, the faint remains of small circular or oval stone structures used for shelter or seasonal habitation, are found across Ireland in their thousands, most of them anonymous and unvisited. What makes any individual example quietly compelling is precisely that anonymity: a depression in the ground, a scatter of stone, the outline of a life lived close to the land, with almost no accompanying narrative to soften its strangeness.
