Hut site, Tuar Sáilín, Co. Kerry

On a slope above a tributary of the Owroe river in Tuar Sáilín, on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, a low ring of stone sits almost unnoticed in the landscape.

It is a hut foundation, subcircular in plan, measuring roughly four metres by three, and standing only a single course of stone high. That one surviving course is in some ways the most telling detail: enough to trace the outline of a small dwelling, not enough to say much more about who built it or when.

The site forms part of a cluster of remains in this part of south Kerry. A short distance upslope lies a related site, and this hut foundation sits approximately twenty metres to the east of it, close enough to suggest the two were once part of the same settled presence on the hillside. Subcircular hut foundations of this kind are found across upland and coastal Ireland and can date from a wide range of periods, from the early medieval centuries through to the post-medieval era of transhumant farming, when communities would move cattle to higher ground in summer and occupy temporary shelters, a practice known in Irish as booleying. The notes drawn from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan's archaeological survey of the Iveragh Peninsula, published by Cork University Press in 1996, offer no firm date for this particular structure, and without excavation, the stones keep that information to themselves.
