Ivy Castle, Townparks, Co. Galway
Co. Galway |
House
A structure known as Ivy Castle sits within the Townparks area of County Galway, a name that implies something grander, or at least more legible, than what the historical record currently offers.
The name alone raises questions. Castles in Ireland range from substantial Anglo-Norman tower houses to modest fortified enclosures, and the ivy that clings to ruined masonry across the country has a way of lending romance to walls that might otherwise go unnoticed. That a place carries this name at all suggests some remnant of fortification, or at minimum a local memory of one, persisting in the landscape and in the placename long after the structure itself may have fallen into obscurity.
