Kellybrook House, Kellybrook, Co. Roscommon

Sitting at the foot of an east-facing slope on the western edge of a broad, flat-bottomed valley in County Roscommon, this two-storey farmhouse carries within its walls a quiet argument about its own age.

Its rectangular plan and the scale of its original chimneystacks, now replaced, point to a possible 17th-century origin, yet a datestone preserved at the property is inscribed 1770. Whether that date marks a rebuilding, a significant alteration, or simply the year someone thought worth recording in stone is no longer clear. The house measures roughly 12.75 metres east to west and 7.35 metres north to south, with a return at the centre of the south side. Its fireplaces are now blocked, the stairs return on the north side is gone, and a fragment of the north wall of a former eastern extension, once containing a fireplace and oven, survives at a length of about 5.75 metres, a remnant that hints at a larger domestic arrangement that has since contracted around itself.

What gives the house an additional layer of interest is that it also holds a sillstone from Kellybrook Castle, a separate structure located roughly 500 metres to the north. The presence of this architectural fragment at the house suggests a practical reuse of material from the older castle, a common enough practice in rural Ireland but one that quietly ties the two sites together. Archaeological testing carried out immediately to the west of the house by A. Carey in 2019 produced no related material, meaning the ground gave up nothing to complicate or confirm what the building itself suggests. The house remains occupied, which is partly why so much of its fabric survives at all, even if that survival has involved the loss of original features over time.
