Kilkee Railway Station, Circular Road, Kilkee, Co. Clare

The glazed screen along the platform side, six bays of timber and glass, gives the game away before anything else does. This was a railway station, and it looks like one still, even with curtains in the windows.

It was built in 1892, a single-storey structure with a pair of flat-roofed porches projecting from the main block and a lower, flat-roofed return tucked at the rear. The detailing is solid rather than showy: rendered walls sit on a painted brick plinth, brick quoins mark the corners, and the door and window openings carry block-and-start architraves, a stepped surround pattern common to Irish institutional and railway buildings of the period. Timber sliding sash windows with stone sills, timber glazed doors, and red brick chimneystacks rising from a pitched slate roof complete a fairly typical late Victorian railway aesthetic, built for a branch line rather than a mainline terminus. The canopy itself is the most distinctive survival: cast-iron columns carry cast brackets supporting a glazed roof, its gable ends sheeted in timber, sheltering the platform edge in a way that made sense when passengers, not cars, arrived here in numbers.

The building's working life as a station ended at some point, and it was adapted for domestic use, with a two-bay single-storey extension added to one end around 1980 to accommodate that change. What survives is unusually complete for a converted station: the canopy, the platform screen, and the porches all remain legible as railway architecture rather than being stripped back or disguised. It stands as a reminder that Kilkee, now known mainly as a seaside town, was once connected by rail, part of the West Clare line that brought visitors to this stretch of coast before the line's eventual closure left buildings like this one to find new purposes.
