Kiln – corn-drying, Solsborough, Co. Tipperary

Beneath a field at Solsborough in County Tipperary, excavators found not one but five corn-drying kilns, each shaped like a keyhole, their floors stained with oxidised clay and packed with charcoal from fires that had burned out roughly fourteen centuries ago.

Corn-drying kilns were a common feature of early medieval Irish farming life, small stone or clay structures used to dry harvested grain before it could be stored or milled, particularly necessary in a climate where damp could ruin a crop quickly. Finding five of them clustered together, along with ditches and hearths, suggests something more than a single farmstead going about its seasonal work.

The excavation was carried out in 2000 by archaeologist Donald Murphy, and the site proved to be substantially Early Christian in date. Three of the kilns were concentrated in the north-eastern part of the site. Timber recovered from the base of one kiln was sampled for radiocarbon dating and returned a date range of AD 563 to 659, placing it firmly within the early medieval period when Ireland's characteristic ringfort settlements were at their most active. Alongside the kilns, the excavation exposed three ditches, three hearths, and a spread of material that together point to a small but persistent settlement, the kind of community that would have worked the land through the same agricultural rhythms year after year. The density of charcoal recovered from the kilns indicates repeated, sustained use rather than a single episode of burning.
