Kiln – lime, Ballincurrig, Co. Cork

On the eastern side of a road in Ballincurrig, Co. Cork, a structure about five metres tall leans into the hillside as though it grew there.

It is a lime kiln, the kind of industrial relic that once punctuated the Irish countryside with quiet regularity and has since been largely forgotten. Lime kilns were used to burn limestone at high temperatures, producing quicklime that farmers spread on acidic soils to improve fertility, or that builders mixed into mortar. This one is built in the manner typical of the form: random-rubble sandstone walls packed around an earthen core, the whole thing backed into the natural slope so that labourers could tip raw limestone in from above while the burnt lime was drawn out from the front.

The front elevation faces north-west and retains a lintelled corbelled recess, the opening at the base where the finished lime would have been raked out. A corbelled structure uses overlapping courses of stone that project inward to form an arch or hood without a true keystone, a technique found across Irish vernacular building. That recess is now blocked by dumped material, and the rear of it has partly collapsed. The back of the kiln is lost behind heavy overgrowth. What survives is essentially a facade: substantial, legible in outline, but closed off from closer inspection on every side.
