That height alone sets it apart from the smaller, more ruinous examples that dot the Irish countryside. The structure is largely intact along its southeast-facing elevation, which gives it an imposing, almost architectural presence for what was essentially an industrial furnace serving agricultural needs.

A lime kiln works by burning limestone at high temperatures to produce quicklime, which farmers spread on fields to reduce soil acidity. This example follows the standard arrangement: a sandstone-lined funnel at the top, about two and a half metres in diameter, into which limestone and fuel were loaded from above, and a lintelled recess at the base where the burnt lime was raked out. That front recess is corbelled towards the rear, narrowing as it deepens, with a stoking hole to feed and manage the fire. The walls are random rubble encasing an earthen core, a practical method that insulated the heat and made use of whatever stone was locally available. The ramp that once ran to the rear, allowing workers or animals to bring material up to the funnel from higher ground, has since been removed, and the rear of the structure has partially collapsed. The overall front elevation, nearly seven metres wide, still communicates the scale of effort that went into building and operating it.
