Kilnatulla Grave Yard for children, Coolnatullagh, Co. Clare

On a hillock above a narrow valley in County Clare, surrounded by pasture and bounded on one side by a steep gorge, there is a small burial ground set aside specifically for children.

The designation is unusual enough to have been recorded explicitly on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1842, which names it "Kinatulla Grave Yard (for children)", a specificity that was maintained, with the added note "Disused", in the 1915 edition. These grounds belong to a tradition known across Ireland as cillíní, or killeens, informal burial sites used for unbaptised infants and others who, under Catholic Church teaching, could not be interred in consecrated ground. Located outside the boundaries of parish graveyards, they tend to occupy liminal places: field margins, townland boundaries, ancient earthworks, or in this case, a naturally prominent rise in the landscape with a gorge to the north and a long slope falling away to the south.

The site itself is modest in scale. An irregularly shaped spread of small flags, roughly seven metres by three metres, lies moss and grass-covered across the hillock interior; these may be fallen or displaced grave markers, though without further investigation that remains uncertain. Several large unworked boulders placed at the eastern end may serve a similar commemorative function, or may have been moved there from elsewhere on the site over time. What complicates the picture further is that approximately three metres to the south-west there is a possible church site, suggesting that the hillock may have had a longer and more layered sacred history than the children's burial ground alone implies. The pairing of an informal children's cemetery with the remains of an early ecclesiastical site is not uncommon in Ireland, where such liminal ground was often chosen precisely because it already carried some quality of sanctity or ancient use.
