Knockbeg Fort, Townplots, Co. Mayo

A roughly circular earthwork sitting on a gentle rise in County Mayo pastureland, this site is quietly anomalous for what surrounds it as much as for what it is.

Within a radius of less than two hundred metres, the landscape holds at least one other rath to the northwest and, to the southeast, a cluster of enclosures, possible barrows, and a wedge tomb. That density of archaeological remains, spread across rolling terrain shaped by drumlin-like knolls, suggests this part of Townplots was far more deliberately organised in the past than its current agricultural appearance implies.

The fort itself is a raised circular area measuring roughly 22 metres east to west and 23 metres north to south. A rath, to use the Irish term, is a roughly circular enclosure typically defined by an earthen bank and ditch, most commonly associated with early medieval settlement and farmstead use, though the form has a longer and more varied history. Here, the defining bank survives best along the northeast to southeast arc, where it reaches an external height of around 0.8 metres and a width of about 3 metres. Elsewhere the bank has been worn down to a scarp, still rising 1.5 metres on the south side. A fosse, or external ditch, runs along the western edge, measuring between 2 and 2.4 metres in width, and a second outer bank curves from the southeast around to the north. Modern field fences, running on east to west and north to south axes, have cut across and truncated the outer bank at the north and northeast, and a quarry pit roughly 8 metres in diameter has taken a bite out of it at the south-southwest. Despite these intrusions, the interior remains legible: the centre sits very slightly higher than the edges, with a subtle southward slope, and a thick tangle of blackthorn, hawthorn, and brambles rings the perimeter. The views, particularly to the west, are open and wide across that characteristic Mayo terrain of low, rounded hills.
