Lady Well, Tintern, Co. Wexford

A small well enclosed in a masonry canopy, sitting at the base of a west-facing slope near the tidal reach of the Tintern stream, carries the name Lady Well on Ordnance Survey maps going back to 1839.

That is, on the face of it, unremarkable; Ireland has hundreds of named holy wells. What makes this one quietly interesting is the gap between its name and its apparent use. Despite being labelled in gothic lettering on both the 1839 and 1925 editions of the OS six-inch map, a designation that usually signals a place of some religious or folk significance, there is no recorded tradition of veneration attached to it and no offerings have been found there.

The well itself is compact and carefully built. The rectangular basin measures roughly 0.6 metres in each direction and just over half a metre deep, set within a masonry canopy that extends to around 2.18 metres in length with a modest apex of 1.17 metres above the opening. A paved apron spreads out in front of the south-western entrance, suggesting the structure was meant to be approached with some deliberateness. The one clear religious marker is a St Bridget's Cross, the traditional woven rush cross associated with the early Irish saint, inscribed in cement above the opening. Whether that was added as a decorative flourish or reflects an older dedication to Brigid, whose name is frequently attached to wells throughout Ireland, is not known. The well sits about 25 metres south of the old road connecting Clonmines and Fethard, and roughly 90 metres west of a church, placing it within a broader landscape of medieval religious activity around Tintern Abbey, the Cistercian foundation that gives this part of County Wexford its name.
