Lady’s Well, Lattin, Co. Tipperary

A small stone enclosure sits on flat grassland at the foot of a west-facing slope in County Tipperary, its flat lintelled roof and little gate giving it the appearance of something halfway between a miniature chapel and a domestic outbuilding.

Inside is a natural spring, barely a metre across, that once drew crowds every summer. Now there are no votive offerings, no ribbons or coins left by those seeking intercession, and a whitethorn tree that once stood beside the well, the kind of thorny shrub long associated in Irish folk tradition with sacred sites and fairy lore, has collapsed.

The well is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, a dedication recorded in the Ordnance Survey letters compiled by O'Flanagan in 1930, which noted that the pattern, a traditional gathering combining religious observance with communal festivity, had already been discontinued by that time. When the pattern was still active, it was held each year on the 15th of August, the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, a date that placed the gathering squarely within the Catholic liturgical calendar while also aligning with the older rhythm of late summer assembly. The well sits roughly 96 metres below Lattin church and its associated graveyard, which occupy the higher ground to the north-east, and the relationship between the hilltop ecclesiastical site and the spring at its base reflects a pattern common across Ireland, where water sources and elevated sacred ground were understood to belong to the same spiritual geography.

The stone surround retains traces of a circular dry stone wall at its base, suggesting the well was once more substantially enclosed than it appears today. The gate on the well's door still hangs in place, a small functional detail that gives the structure an oddly inhabited quality despite the absence of any active devotion.
