Lisbaun, Loughaunnaman, Co. Mayo

Three raths once occupied this gentle rise in County Mayo, and the fact that two of them have since been levelled makes the one that survives all the more worth pausing over.

The site at Loughaunnaman sits in pasture, straddling a natural ridge that gives it commanding views of the surrounding landscape, and it has carried the name Lisbaun, meaning "white fort" in Irish, since at least the time of the first Ordnance Survey mapping in 1838.

A rath is a roughly circular enclosure, typically dating from the early medieval period, defined by an earthen bank and used as a farmstead or small defended settlement. The Lisbaun example follows that form closely: a near-circular platform measuring about 28.5 metres east to west and 26.5 metres north to south, enclosed by a bank that is still reasonably legible despite centuries of agricultural pressure. The bank is noticeably more substantial on the northern and southern sides than along the east, where it has been worn down to little more than a scarp. At the south, a short section retains drystone facing about 1.6 metres high, a detail that reflects the site's later life as a field boundary rather than any original construction technique. That boundary clipped the rath on a northeast to southwest axis before eventually being removed, and a field fence that once abutted the northern bank has similarly disappeared. The builders compensated for the natural slope by building up the southeast and south sides, so the interior remains relatively level, apart from a slight rise in the northwest quadrant. The perimeter is now ringed with gorse and hawthorn, and the interior is under grass. The two neighbouring raths to the northwest and north-northwest, once part of what may have been a cluster of early medieval enclosures within close sight of one another, survive only as faint traces or not at all.
