Lisdoo, Ballynamanagh, Co. Galway

Sitting on a rise in gently rolling grassland near Ballynamanagh, this circular earthwork carries a quiet peculiarity beneath its surface.

Within the southwest quadrant of the interior lies a souterrain, an underground stone-lined passage or chamber of the kind built during the early medieval period, most likely for storage or refuge. The combination of a well-preserved ringfort with a functioning souterrain still intact beneath it places this site among the more complete examples of its type in County Galway.

The rath itself measures 41.2 metres in diameter, defined by an earthen bank and an external fosse, the ditch that would originally have reinforced the enclosure against both livestock straying and unwanted visitors. Along the northern arc of the bank, traces of internal stone-facing remain visible, suggesting that the original builders lined at least part of the earthwork with dressed or laid stone rather than relying solely on compacted earth. A causewayed gap measuring 2.3 metres wide at the northeast may represent the original entrance, the point where a raised approach allowed crossing over the fosse without breaking its continuity. The site appears in the work of Holt in 1912 and was noted again by McCaffrey in 1952, meaning it has been on the scholarly record for well over a century, though it remains little discussed outside regional archaeological literature.
