Ringforts

Lisroe, Dromin, Co. Kerry

In the Kerry countryside, a circular earthwork sits in ordinary pasture, its ancient geometry quietly absorbed into the field boundaries around it.

A rath, sometimes called a ringfort, is an enclosed farmstead of the early medieval period, typically dating from around the fifth to the twelfth century, built by a single family or small community and defended by one or more earthen banks. The example at Lisroe in Dromin is modest but legible: a roughly forty-metre circle defined by an earthen bank that still stands to an internal height of 1.8 metres, with a single narrow gap of about one metre at the northwest, the probable location of the original entrance.

What makes Lisroe quietly interesting is the way the landscape has worked around it rather than against it. The earthen bank, which runs from the southwest around to the north, has been incorporated into the surrounding field boundary system, meaning that farmers here did not level the rath but instead made it useful, folding its mass into the logic of their own enclosures. The interior has become part of a field, grazed over like any other patch of ground. The site faces southeast, overlooking the estuary of the River Laune, a position that would have given its original occupants a clear view of the water and the low ground beyond. The rath appears by name on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1846, recorded as an embanked circular enclosure of the same dimensions recognisable today, which confirms both its survival and its local identity across at least two centuries of mapping. The name Lisroe itself derives from the Irish lios rua, meaning red fort or red enclosure, a colour reference that may once have described the appearance of the freshly cut earthwork.
