Loop Head Lighthouse, Kilbaha South, Co. Clare

At the very tip of the Loop Head peninsula, where the land finally gives out to Atlantic weather from three sides at once, stands a limestone tower built to do one job: warn ships off a headland that has claimed more than its share of them.

What catches the eye is not scale so much as proportion, a circular tower rising through four distinct stages to a glazed lantern ringed by a metal walkway, the whole thing set on walls that taper outward at the base, a batter, giving the structure a squat, rooted look against the wind rather than a slender one.

The lighthouse dates to 1854, a period when the Irish coastline was being systematically fitted out with navigational aids as shipping traffic increased and the cost of shipwrecks, in cargo and in lives, became harder to justify. Cut limestone was the material of choice for durability against salt-laden gales, and the design here carries small but deliberate touches of refinement: stone consoles, projecting supports carved to bear the weight of the walkway above, sit beneath the lantern gallery, while the windows keep their original timber sliding sashes and the door its timber matchboard construction, planks fixed edge to edge over a frame. None of this is showy work, but it is careful, the kind of building put up to last through conditions that would test lesser stonework within a generation.

What survives today is essentially the building as completed in the 1850s, its single-bay footprint and four-stage massing unaltered in the essentials, even as the technology inside a lighthouse of this age would have changed considerably over the following century and a half. The consoles and base batter are worth looking at closely if you get the chance; they are the sort of structural detail that a passing glance misses but that explains why a tower built this way can stand up to a headland that gets the worst of the weather coming in off the open Atlantic.
